USDA Secretary Details 5 Big Changes in Rural America
USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack listed “five big changes happening right now in rural America” on Medium. While the list focused primarily on agriculture as it intersects with the rural economy, he also discussed persistent poverty and broadband initiatives.
The five big areas of opportunity in rural America as identified by the Secretary are:
- Innovations in farming and creating a new generation of farmers.
- An abundance of agriculture jobs but the higher education system is not producing enough qualified graduates to fill them.
- Investment in broadband internet.
- Building on farm to table and local food system infrastructure.
