In Memory of Rick Cohen, Journalist and Philanthropy Advocate

Rick Cohen, a long time advocate for rural philanthropy and journalist, passed away on November 17. “Rick was never afraid to issue a challenge when he saw inequity and speak out for underserved rural communities,” said Moises Loza. “Rural America has lost an ally and a friend. He will be missed.”

Rick consistently challenged foundations and nonprofits to focus more of their work on combatting poverty in rural areas and among the most vulnerable populations. His research showed that up to 99 percent of private philanthropic giving went to projects in metropolitan areas, and virtually ignored rural regions. “Reducing societal inequity,” he wrote recently, “cannot happen by writing off rural Americans.”

As of this writing, over 150 people have shared their personal reflections on Rick’s work and impact. Remembrances are being shared at The Nonprofit Quarterly website.
