The Housing Assistance Council (HAC) is pleased to invite you to participate in a webinar on a model program for housing homeless veterans. More than 250,000 veterans experience homelessness each year. Veterans in rural areas are more likely to be homeless for longer periods of time and have serious medical problems. Nonprofits in rural communities are addressing the challenges for housing homeless veterans.

Several years of planning and hard work by veteran advocates and two nonprofit housing agencies led to the January 2011 opening of Canal Street Apartments in Winooski, Vermont. Housing Vermont was the developer of the six-story building and the Committee on Temporary Shelter (COTS) is the service provider for its tenants. The project features two-year transitional housing for homeless veterans on the first four floors, plus permanent affordable housing on the top two floors. Canal Street offers safe and decent housing to veterans in need.

Rural homeless veterans face a lack of opportunities for safe shelter compared to urban or suburban veterans. Join the Housing Assistance Council’s webinar on July 23rd to learn more about these challenges and the impact of a successful model for serving rural veterans.

This webinar is supported by The Home Depot Foundation. For more information, please email Janice Clark at Janice@ruralhome.org.
