An article published on January 28, 2015 in The Atlantic, Rural America’s Silent Housing Crisis, makes several references to HAC Research and Information products. The article highlights the challenges faced by rural Americans in finding good quality and affordable housing. Author Gillian B. White points to a lack of knowledge about these issues on the part of the general public and decreasing federal funding as contributing factors.

The article references HAC’s Rural Data Portal and quotes Director of Research and Information, Lance George on the subject of manufactured housing in rural areas. Manufactured housing is a lower-cost alternative to owning a traditional home in many rural areas. In addition, White describes the efforts made by local nonprofits to create and rehabilitate their housing stock through a sweat-equity model, wherein community members are tasked with the labor of improving their own homes, and the homes of their neighbors, in order to reduce the financial burden of the projects.
