Peter Carey

Peter’s journey to the Housing Assistance Council (HAC) has been defined by a deep commitment to rural development and housing affordability. With decades of experience working in community development and housing finance, Peter brought invaluable insights to HAC’s board. His tenure on the board not only helped steer the organization through pivotal moments but also deepened his belief in the transformative power of rural housing programs.

Peter first encountered HAC while working in community lending, where he saw firsthand the critical need for accessible, affordable housing in rural areas. Drawn to HAC’s mission of strengthening rural communities, he was inspired by how the organization provided essential financial and technical support to underserved regions. When the opportunity arose to join HAC’s board, Peter didn’t hesitate, recognizing that the organization’s work aligned with his passion for improving rural livelihoods.

Reflecting on his time with HAC, Peter feels the organization has excelled in several key areas. He is particularly proud of the work HAC has done in preserving and rehabilitating affordable housing stock, especially in regions where housing infrastructure is aging rapidly. “HAC’s commitment to programs like Section 515 preservation has been crucial,” Peter noted. “Without these efforts, so many low-income families would be left without safe, affordable places to live. HAC really shines in making sure no one is forgotten.”

Peter is also impressed by how HAC has fostered a network of community-based organizations, helping them build the capacity to develop and manage housing projects. “HAC doesn’t just provide funding—they empower local organizations with the knowledge and tools to succeed on their own. That’s been a real game-changer for rural communities that need sustainable solutions,” he said.

As Peter steps down from his role, his hopes for HAC’s future are bright. He envisions the organization continuing to grow its impact by expanding partnerships and addressing emerging issues in rural housing, such as climate resilience and the need for more inclusive housing policies. He also hopes that HAC will continue to support younger generations of rural leaders, ensuring that they have the resources and mentorship necessary to take on future housing challenges.

“Rural America is changing, and HAC has to stay ahead of those changes,” Peter remarked. “I’m confident that with the right leadership and continued dedication to its mission, HAC will keep transforming lives in ways we can’t even imagine yet.”

Reflecting on Peter’s impact, David remarked, “Peter has been an incredible asset to HAC. His experience and unwavering dedication have helped guide us through some of the most critical challenges facing rural America. His insight has been invaluable, and his passion for ensuring that everyone, no matter where they live, has access to safe and affordable housing has left a lasting legacy. We are all deeply grateful for his service.”

David’s words echo the sentiments of many at HAC who have worked alongside Peter, acknowledging the pivotal role he played in strengthening the organization and championing rural communities across the country.

As Peter bids farewell to his role on HAC’s board, his legacy of thoughtful leadership and dedication to housing affordability will undoubtedly leave a lasting imprint. His work, grounded in the belief that everyone deserves a safe, affordable home, has helped shape HAC into the impactful organization it is today.
