Creative Placemaking and Rural Design

Building Vibrant, Resilient Rural Communities Through Placemaking

HAC helps rural and tribal communities create spaces where people want to live, work, and visit, through creative placemaking that leverages local assets, arts, and culture.

Locally Led. Asset-Based. Impact-Driven.

The Housing Assistance Council (HAC) partners with rural and tribal communities to create vibrant spaces through placemaking. Our approach is locally driven and asset-based, helping communities leverage their culture, history, and creativity to stimulate economic development and strengthen community bonds.

From technical assistance and direct engagement to education, coaching, and cohort facilitation, HAC is dedicated to helping communities turn their ideas into action.

How HAC Supports Rural Placemaking

  • Direct Engagement

HAC visits communities to assess local assets and challenges, delivering actionable reports, funding options, and real-world case studies.

  • Storytelling

We help communities craft compelling narratives that attract attention, partnerships, and funding.

  • Fundraising Support

HAC provides expertise in refining fundraising strategies and connecting communities with national and regional funders.

  • Education

Customized learning programs bring placemaking and rural design best practices directly to the community level.

  • Short-Term Coaching

For communities facing opportunities or challenges, HAC offers targeted coaching to identify next steps, including funding pursuits.

  • Regional and Local Cohort Facilitation

HAC facilitates peer-to-peer learning cohorts, creating space for rural communities to learn from and inspire one another.

Transforming Ideas into Action Across Rural America

Hundreds of rural and tribal communities are stronger and more resilient after partnering with HAC’s placemaking team. Our collaborative, tailored approach helps rural spaces thrive, blending creativity, capacity building, and long-term planning.

“HAC’s team demystified creative placemaking for us. And they’ve stuck with our community and project at every stage. They make us aware of big funding pots and niche local and regional funders. Our organization—from food security to housing—is stronger because of HAC.”

“Seminole Arts Council is on a roll. With HAC’s expert support and coaching via two placemaking programs, we’ve broken ground on our top priority, and we (finally!) have a solid plan for the future. HAC doesn’t just advise, they listen, and their guidance has helped us turn our ideas into action.”

Our Partners in Rural Placemaking

HAC’s placemaking work spans rural and tribal towns, hospitals, community foundations, civic organizations, libraries, regional foundations, economic development authorities, state governments, and rural schools. We specialize in linking placemaking efforts to youth engagement—strengthening future generations and entire communities.
