Initiatives

Jennifer Emmerling/ There Is More Work To Be Done

One of the primary components of HAC’s mission is a commitment to serve the poorest and most disadvantaged people in rural America. To facilitate these efforts, HAC has several long standing initiatives and regularly conducts special initiatives focused on specific regions or populations, special projects, or innovative approaches to housing development.

These initiatives allow HAC to bring specific attention to areas or issues that are of particular importance.

Affordable Housing for Rural Veterans

Veterans of the United States military services put their lives in danger to protect their country and its citizens.  However, when they return home they are not always able to find housing and access to services in their communities.

Citizens’ Institute on Rural Design

The Citizens’ Institute on Rural Design (CIRD) is a leadership initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Housing Assistance Council. Focusing on communities with populations of 50,000 or less, CIRD’s goal is to enhance the quality of life and economic vitality of rural America through planning, design, and creative placemaking.

There is More Work to be Done

There is More Work to Be Done celebrates the struggle for affordable homes and stronger communities in rural America, both past and present, inspired by photographer and activist George “Elfie” Ballis (1925-2010).

Rural Resilience

When a disaster strikes a rural area, one of the most serious problems is a lack of relevant information about assistance available for preparedness and recovery efforts. This site helps bridge that gap.

Duty to Serve

The Community Reinvestment Act (CRA), adopted in 1977, requires federally-insured depository institutions to help meet the credit needs of their entire communities, including low- and moderate-income neighborhoods. Very little is known about the implementation of CRA in rural areas.
