2008

January 16-18, 2008: Building Rural Communities Through CHDOs was held at the Hotel Monaco in downtown Seattle, Washington. This training conference offered attendees the choice of two tracks: Building HOME for CHDOs and Nonprofits or Single Family Housing Development

Supplemental Training: Registrants to Building Rural Communities through CHDOs in Seattle had an opportunity to attend pre-training seminars on Post-Purchase Housing Counseling or Downpayment Assistance on January 15. Click here for more information.

January 29-30, 2008: Building Rural Communities Through CHDOs held at the Sheraton Hotel Birmingham in Birmingham, Alabama. Building HOME is a comprehensive introduction to the HOME Program, as well as an important refresher on the basic elements of the program. Participants become familiar with program activities, including homeowner rehabilitation, homebuyer, rental housing, tenant-based rental assistance, and CHDO activities.

February 7-8, 2008: Building Rural Communities Through CHDOs held at the Holiday Inn in Lafayette, LA. This Single Family Housing Development workshop is designed to provide participants with important information on financing and developing affordable single-family housing. Participants examine the overall assumptions, risks, procedures, financial considerations, site planning, construction and development issues inherent in affordable single-family housing development.

February 12-13, 2008: Building Rural Communities Through CHDOs held at theResidence Inn by Marriott- Kansas City Airport in Kansas City, MO. See Single Family Housing Development workshop description above.

March 25-27, 2008: Building Rural Communities Through CHDOs held at the Wyndham Riverwalk Hotel in Jacksonville, Florida. This training conference offered attendees the choice of two tracks: Advanced Financial Management or Single Family Housing Development

April 29-30, 2008: Building Rural Communities Through CHDOs held in Little Rock, Arkansas this training provide participants with important information on financing and developing affordable single-family housing. See Single Family Housing Development workshop description above.

May 12, 2008: Applying for HUD Rural Housing and Economic Development in 2008 from 3:00 - 4:00 pm EST audioweb conference. The conference provided local practitioners with the information they need to successfully apply for RHED program funds.

This training was sponsored by the Department of Health and Human Services Compassion Capital Fund as part of the Rural Homelessness Capacity Building Project.

June 4-5, 2008: Building Rural Communities Through CHDOs held at the Holiday Inn Express in Charleston, WV. This course, Housing Rehabilitation for Homeownership, provided information to participants on conducting a market analysis, finding your development partners, assessing project feasibility, acquisition, qualifying homebuyers, the financing and design of a project (including "green" practices), the rehabilitation and repair process, and project close out.

June 21, 2008: Building Rural Communities Through CHDOs, was held in Macon, Georgia. Sponsored by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Housing Assistance Council, this workshop, Building Rural Communities through CHDOs: Nonprofit Board of Directors' Workshop, provided participants with information about how nonprofit boards of directors can work more effectively and efficiently.  Workshop topics included Board member roles & responsibilities, Conflicts of interest and board ethics, How and why nonprofit boards change over time, Financial responsibilities of board members, and Dealing with difficult situations

June 24-25, 2008: Building Rural Communities Through CHDOs: Appalachia was held in Greenup, Kentucky. Sponsored by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Housing Assistance Council, this workshop, Building Rural Communities through CHDOs : Advanced Financial Management provided training on accounting and financial management responsibilities for rural CHDOs and other housing development agencies. 

June 24-25, 2008: Building Rural Communities Through CHDOs was held in Buffalo, NY. Sponsored by The US Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Housing Assistance Council, this workshop, Housing Rehabilitation for Homeownership, increased the capacity of affordable housing developers to acquire and rehabilitate single family housing using the HOME Program. This two-day course provided information to participants on conducting a market analysis, finding development partners, assessing project feasibility, acquisition, qualifying homebuyers, the financing and design of a project (including "green" practices), the rehabilitation and repair process, and project close out.

July 8-9, 2008: Building Rural Communities Through CHDOs was held in Albuquerque, NM. July 15-17 , 2008: Building Rural Communities Through CHDOs: Colonias was held in San Antonio, Texas. July 22-23, 2008: Building Rural Communities Through CHDOs was held in Syracuse, NY. Sponsored by The US Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Housing Assistance Council, this workshop, Advanced Housing Rehabilitation for Homeownership, was designed for affordable housing developers who have experience with acquisition and rehabilitation of single family housing for homeownership using the HOME Program.

Sponsored by The US Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Housing Assistance Council, this workshop, Building Rural Communities through CHDOs : Single Family Housing Development will provide participants with important information on financing and developing affordable single family housing using the HOME Program. Participants will examine the overall assumptions, risks, procedures, financial considerations, site planning, construction and development issues inherent in affordable single family housing development. Equally important to a successfully designed and implemented program is the homebuyer preparation process. This program will cover the issues related to designing and marketing a product that leads to eligible and pre-qualified homebuyer pools.

August 11-12, 2008: Building Green in Rural Communities will be held in Holyoke, MA.

Join the Housing Assistance Council for the one and ½ day "Green Building for Rural Communities" training session. Participants will hear from regional experts, as they discuss the overall impacts of implementing green building practices into affordable rural housing development, obtain first hand information from rural housing practitioners who have successfully gone Green, benefit from a site-visit to an innovative and award-winning green development in Western Massachusetts, and take part in a funders roundtable discussion.

Sponsored by The US Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Housing Assistance Council, this two-day workshop for CHDOs and potential CHDOs, Tax Credit Compliance - Focusing on Managing Compliance in LIHTC Properties with HOME Funding, will help ensure that you and your staff have the tools you need to understand LIHTC program compliance. Compliance with Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) and HOME program rules for tenant and unit eligibility are essential to a property's tax credit status and long-term success. 

This workshop will be beneficial for, Front-line staff, Managers, and Owners of low income tax credit properties and will cover all critical compliance areas, including Applicant/tenant eligibility, Income determination and verification, LIHTC and HOME Program differences, The next available unit rule, and Other Important Topics.

Participants will receive two valuable course books and benefit from the forms and monitoring tools included and used during the course.

August 18, 2008: Building Rural Communities Through CHDOs will be held in Kansas City, MO.

**Participation in this event is limited to organizations which fall under the jurisdiction of the Missouri HUD Community Planning and Development Office.

Sponsored by The US Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Housing Assistance Council, this seminar, Building Rural Communities through CHDOs : Determining Income, will review the three definitions of income used in the HOME Program and provide guidance on how CHDOs can ensure they are targeting eligible households. Determining Income is a fundamental component of using HOME funds effectively and ensuring that they are targeted to households that are eligible for assistance. HOME Program rules require the use of one of three definitions for annual income to determine the eligibility of applicants.
