SUMMARY:Non-HAC: Preserving Affordable Rural Rental Housing: New Tools and Promising Practices
DESCRIPTION:Session Description:\nThousands of affordable rental properties in rural communities are in danger of being lost to disrepair or market forces in the next decade. This free Connecting Communities® webinar will explore strategies that are being implemented to try and preserve them\, with a focus on recently released data and tools that can help community organizations and their partners better understand the current landscape of rural affordable rental housing. \nJoin us on May 4 to hear presenters from PolicyMap and USDA Rural Housing Service describe the tools and data their organizations have developed or are hosting. You’ll also hear a practitioner’s perspective\, as the leader of Southwest Minnesota Housing Partnership discusses how his organization is using those tools and resources to identify at-risk properties and assess preservation strategies. \nPresenters include: \n\nElizabeth Nash\, ‎Vice President of Data and Product Development\, PolicyMap\nBryan Hooper\, Deputy Administrator for Multifamily Housing\, USDA Rural Housing Service\nRick Goodemann\, Chief Executive Officer\, Southwest Minnesota Housing Partnership

SUMMARY:Non-HAC: Hope in the Delta: Turning the Tide on Persistent Rural Poverty
DESCRIPTION:In April 2017\, NeighborWorks America will convene community development professionals from around the country for a conference to address persistent rural poverty areas and lift up asset-based strategies and award-winning contemporary community economic development projects. \nThis unique event is primarily for the 115 members of the NeighborWorks Rural Initiative and will be hosted by local network member HOPE Enterprise. The goal of the convening is to identify innovative ideas and strategies that will be relevant and timely to the Network and partners across sectors. \nPersistent poverty is an enduring problem in rural America. Geographic isolation\, lack of resources and economic opportunities\, and disinvestment have led to high poverty rates for decades. Rural and small town poverty rates are highest in the South\, where more than half of all rural and small town persons in poverty reside. Even more disconcerting is that the number of persistent poverty counties is on the rise\, having increased by 8 percent from the year 2000 level. \nView the Agenda: https://www.neighborworks.org/Documents/Community_Docs/Rural_Docs/HopeintheDeltaRuralConvening-Agenda.aspx

SUMMARY:Non-HAC: Economic Mobility in Rural America: A discussion of education\, access\, and opportunity
DESCRIPTION:Since the Great Recession\, the demographic and economic chasm between rural and urban communities in the United States has grown. Today\, rural Americans—about 17 percent of the U.S. population—often face challenges that include lower wages\, higher rates of joblessness\, and inadequate services and infrastructure necessary to ensure opportunity. \nOutcomes for rural college graduates can differ significantly from those of urban students\, and the migration of highly educated\, working-age Americans to densely populated areas affects rural economic growth. The absence of public transportation and robust social and educational services also is a barrier to economic mobility in these areas. Economic exclusion is heightened by the departure of banks and other financial service providers and an increase in predatory lending. \nSupport from the federal government\, states\, nonprofits\, and the for-profit sector for entrepreneurship—and to increase educational opportunity\, infrastructure\, and social and financial services in rural communities—is important to help people move up the economic ladder no matter where they live. Please join the Pew Charitable Trust for a discussion with leading experts on how to ensure that rural Americans are both economically mobile and financially secure. \nModerator\nLance George\, Housing Assistance Council \nSpeakers\n\nJohn Cromartie\, U.S. Department of Agriculture\, on a changing rural America\nAndrew Koricich\, Appalachian State University\, on how living in a rural community influences postsecondary choices\nNisha Patel\, U.S. Partnership on Mobility from Poverty\, the Urban Institute\, on access to services in rural areas\nYvonne Sparks\, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis\, on access to financial institutions and services and pathways to economic growth\n\nLunch will be provided. \nThe Pew Charitable Trusts makes every effort to comply with federal\, state\, and local government ethics rules\, including when hosting events. Please make sure that your participation is consistent with applicable ethics rules.
